How long does it take to weave a dishtowel?

This is always a hard question to answer. There is so much more than the weaving part of weaving. Mostly, math. So much math.

I first choose a pattern, or create one.

Then, do the math to determine how much yarn I’ll need. For 14 towels, I’ll need approximately 10, 504 yards. To help you picture that, it’s about 6 miles of yarn.

A box of pre-towels, or pre-blankets!

Winding the warp. I wind 14 yards, 215 times. Then I do it again, so I have 430 ends.

I thread 2 pieces of yarn through each slot in the reed, which is kind of like a comb.

Threading the heddles.

I then move to the back of the loom and thread the heddles. This is where the pattern gets created.

If you’re keeping track, I have by now handled each piece of yarn 3 times. 430 pieces of yarn 3 times is 1,290!

Finally, it is time to wind the warp onto the beam, tension the warp, and then I can start weaving!

After I weave all 14 yards, I pull the towels off in one long length, stitch each one before I cut them apart to be washed, ironed and hemmed.

“How long does it take to weave a dishtowel?”

Roughly 7 to 10 hours per towel, I would guess. I haven’t done that math, yet.
